The Post-It Note Jaguar

Posted by webstuffscan on 12th January 2007

This confirms the fact - Majority of people on planet earth are crazy. Here are a bunch of them decorating a car with post it notes. Yes, you read it correct - They seems to have used over 14,000 Post-it notes to cover a Jaguar completely.

Now why would I say majority of people are crazy? Because it has become a major news item! Agreed, reporting it again makes me part of the crowd :)

Windows XP keyboard tricks to impress - Help, my screen is upside down!

Posted by webstuffscan on 6th January 2007

Here are some Windows keyboard tricks you can use to impress your friends! These are nothing but less known features of the Windows XP operating system. To revert back the screen to previous state, repeat the key combination again.

Trick 1 (High Contrast) - Hold Shift, Alt and Print Screen keys together. Click on “OK” when a message appears (this enables high contrast on Windows system). The screen should change to black! There is even a Youtube video for this trick!

Trick 2 (Magnifier) - Hold Windows key (logo key) and R key together. Type magnify in the run box and then press Enter. This enables magnifier tool and anything near the mouse trail will now appear magnified on top!

Trick 3 (Invert Windows screen) - This is one of the scariest tricks which turns Windows upside down. You can press Ctrl, Alt and then any of the four arrow keys (Ctrl-Alt-Down will rotate screen by 180 degrees)! I have noticed that this doesn’t work on certain Windows XP machines (It is dependent on video driver).

You can check out these and many more accessibility tutorials here.

Life of an Indian taxi driver - Horn OK Please (2006)

Posted by webstuffscan on 5th January 2007

“HORN OK PLEASE” follows a monotonous day in the life of an Indian taxi driver named Lucky. Lucky’s goal is to earn enough rupees to buy the air-conditioned taxi of his dreams…

HORN OK PLEASE was produced in 2006 by Flickerpix Animations Ltd. in Belfast. It has already won eight international awards. This animation is a creative collaboration between Indian and Northern Ireland animators. This film is combination of stop-motion (clay) models and drawn, composited backgrounds. The whole film was shot on a NIKON D70 stills camera and post-produced in After Effects on a simple pc.

What is depicted is from the life of a Mumbai taxi driver. The cartoon does a pretty good job of capturing Mumbai life!

Note: - In India “Horn OK Please” means “Horn Please” :)

You can catch the Youtube video here.

The Subservient Programmer

Posted by webstuffscan on 20th November 2006

The Subservient ProgrammerPeople love to have power over others. So it is no wonder that The Subservient Programmer Web page is very popular!

This is an interactive web page where you initially see a programmer doing his work. Using a text box you can send various commands to him. The Subservient programmer executes all your commands without any complaint. A wide set of commands such as cry, break, dance etc. are supported. The page is good fun and is a good stress buster!

Architecture
The architecture of this cool application is simple enough. A set of keywords is attached to a movie clip. When a visitor types in an action it is matched to one of the keywords. Then the corresponding movie clip is played. The site contains advise on how to create a similar application in Visual Studio Express and provides source code as well. Obviously the hard part is how you shoot the videos! There is also a big set of funny outtakes!
Unfortunately this uses Windows media player as an activex control. Hence it won’t work on anything other than Internet Explorer(6.0+).

Background
In 2005, A Burger King promotional web page The Subservient Chicken won the The cyber won award for the best direct marketing campaign. This page contained a guy in chicken costume(!) obeying all the commands typed in! That is why if you look at the footer of The Subservient Web Page you see the line “Because chickens can’t code.” It is interesting to note that user experience in The Subservient Programmer is much better than the Subservient Chicken.

Similar Stuff
Subservient Stickman - A stick man obeys you! This is implemented using animated gifs and hence works on anything.
Other sites containing similar stuff are Stewie Live, The Subservient President, Subservient Blair and Sanjeev at NevaShut
